Rise Above!

  Here we are time for another update on the happenings at Deep Six Cycles. First of all we would really like to thank everyone who has helped with the raffle. We have been selling far more raffle tickets online and that means the folks who we interact with on Instagram/Facebook (& other social media), those that follow the blog and receive our news letter and everyone we are connected to on the forums are chipping in and helping by buying raffle tickets. You guys are really helping to make this thing a success! 

 We are still working on finishing up the raffle bike with the East End crew. The tins are off to Butt's Chop Shop to be painted. And I have received a few sneak peek shots so maybe I will share one... This is not even close to finished. It has no clear so it will really have some depth when it is done. But now you can get all excited about how cool this bike is going to be with this bad assed paint job donated by Butt's Chop Shop.

 We have moved the Deep 6/ East End show room around at the shop and have an entirely new lay out! I am really excited to announce we have all but shut down our old web store and from now on all our online sales will be through the website only. He only have a few more items to add. Though I think we will be working on and refining the site for a long time to come...

We have brought back the Flying Girder tee shirts. This classic logo has not been available on shirts in many years except for a few attempts to  have them made with a pre-order system through some strange and confusing online company (which actually worked fine). This time around we have had them printed locally on 100% cotton shirts. The local company is a new start up who have replaced another print shop down town. It just so happens to be owned and run by a great crew of people we happen to be connected to. I am really pleased with the extremely quick turn around time and very professional manner in which my order was handled.   All the work moving the shop around has me a little behind on a few orders. I should be catching up around the middle to end of next week. Thanks to every one who has placed orders with us. We do have a lot of product in inventory and ready to go. If you have not heard the news we have added Twin Cam points covers to the product line and have plenty Twin Cam and Non-Twin Cam points covers in stock and ready to go both in aluminum and brass.

  We are really hoping to settle into this new website and make it a way to share what we are doing, who we are and what we are about. That in my mind is a big reason to try to keep the blog up to date. But we also have a gallery section that includes pictures of our customers bikes featuring our products (thanks to every one who has sent us photos!), a photo feed from our instagram, YouTube Videos made by us, and of course a photo gallery with some of our best shots.  You can check it out by hitting the button below! Please keep in mind setting this website up and keeping it up to date is 100% handled in house and one more thing to juggle. So it tends to be a work in progress...

A few words from Richard Page (The Down Rider The Raffle Is For)

  I lifted this with Richard's permission from a Facebook post. The profit from this raffle really will help someone who needs it. And this post really hits on so many good points that I wanted to share it with everyone who may not know about Richard and his situation.

This raffle bike looks awesome! After all the medical and legal dust settles and I can move again I am going to rebuild my 1994 Sportster. I am hoping to do a lot of the work my self, the parts I need and the work i can't do myself will all be from Deep Six Cycles or Flying Chairs. In Deep Six's blog he mentioned that I might not be alive if I wasn't wearing a helmet. That is the truth, my full face helmet looks terrible. Even with a full face helmet, good boots, and riding gear I came out of this missing one and a half toes, 3 broken bones in my leg, a trashed knee, hip damage, 4 broken ribs, and a stroke. If your not happy with your safety gear shop for some that is more to your liking. My goffy safety gear saved my life! Even as bad as my leg got messed up, I don't think there would have been anything for them to fix without the gear I had on. I want to THANK EVERYONE for all the support I have been and am still getting. There are a lot of good people and a great comunity in Asheville, glad to be a part of it.

2015 Deep Six Cycles/East End Moto Raffle Update!

 With the Melt down at the end of April our shop & (Flying Chairs (formerly East End Moto)  have been working away at pulling the raffle bike together. I have to say I love the way this thing has taken shape. The bike is pretty  cool for something still running so many stock parts and defiantly has its own personality and presence.

 But more than that when we began this whole endeavor we knew we wanted to donate the profits to a charity.  In talking with some friends I was informed of a local guy who was riding on the hwy when a tractor trailer truck in front of him struck a car and he became tangled up in the mess. Now this did not play out well... Richard had to be put into an induced coma, lost some toes and suffered a host of other trauma. I he is very lucky to still be with us and I suspect that if he had not had a helmet on that would not be the case.

 If you are local you may know Richard Page or have had some passing interaction with him. In fact he may have asked you to sign in or checked your id at the Double Crown in West Asheville. When this raffle began (for me) it was really all about  the bike, and it was just a bonus that we got to help a charity. I have to say it is crazy how much that has changed for me. The difference is that this does not go to some big foundation this is to help a very real person who is respected and loved by many of my friends. 

 I am also happy to thank some of our sponsors who have donated to the bike project. This keeps the overhead of the build down drastically. Which in turn allows us more profit to pass on to help Richard. Butts Chop Shop has donated a paint job at cost. I can not wait to see what flaky goodness Derek throws down. He has pretty much been granted full reign. I know he has a host of ideas and they all sound good! 

 Hard Drive Parts has donated a tail light and tag bracket. And I really have to thank our rep Dusty for coming through a bugging his bosses about this! When we begin next years raffle bike we will hit you guys up sooner! There were a number of parts we purchased from Hard Drive to get the project under way.

  Here we are moving forward and pushing out into uncharted waters (to us). We have been tackling the challenge of putting together this new website for ourselves. And this just so happens to be our very first unique post the the blog. We are leaving our original blog hosted by blogger/blogspot in the dust.

 So It seems fitting to post up a song that I was a bit obsessed with for a short time. I found myself listening to this song constantly while conceiving the very roots and developing the foundation of the company. Mind you this was in the hay day of Myspace and this song played on the company profile when you would visit. Yeah there was no Facebook then... How I miss those days!

  The long hard winter may have you feeling a bit stir crazy. The budget Neo Bobber/ Brat Bike (while in progress)

I came across a few photos of Dave from East End Motorsports cutting the rear seat & shock section off the budget build. He hacked it off and got it ready for us to fab it back together. See the previous post to see the bike about as finished as the customer will let us.

Honda CM450 Brat Style

  Here is a Honda CM450 that we cut the seat section and shock mounts off and gave it our own touch. We also mounted the fender to the swing arm. Just an affordable little neo bob job or brat bike . Junk Yard Score! Famco Arbor Press.

                       I made a run to the scrap yard with a load of old junk bike parts, frame sections, machining chips and unusable drops. While I was there I found a 3 ton Arbor press on the factory stand. I dragged it to a slightly less muddy part of the yard where I hoped I could get the truck to it with out shredding my tires (which was still a gamble). I know I like to see stuff like this so I thought some one else may be interested. I also check it out in the short video I made!

                                     

Deep Six Cycles first ever machining video!

We recorded and edited this video to give every one an idea of what we do and the care that goes into our products. We learnt a lot by the time we finished filming and editing the first half and made some adaptions while making the rest of the video. Part 2 kind of slays part one! Still a lot of room for improvement, but considering this is the first video I have ever put together and edited I am pretty happy with it. The second part is a lot more fast paced with multiple camera angles and such. I learnt a lot by the time I was half way done filming and editing. It was fun and we will be trying to add more content to our channel for all of you who are interested!

Legalize Lane Splitting on all public roads!

  Please sign this petition. I am a firm believer in white lining and lane splitting as long as it is done in a safe and responsible manner. It is legal in California and most if Europe just to name a few! If you have ever been caught on the free way on a motorcycle especially an air cooled one or while trying be some place due to some sort of emergency you will want to sign this. Just being able to move even 10mph over the vehicles that are stopped or at a crawl will get you home or the next off ramp much sooner and it is one less vehicle sitting there idling blocking traffic needlessly polluting. Deep Six Cycles Machining Brass Hand Grips Sneak Peek Video!

  We have been working on a video of our brass hand grips being machined. We just released an unfinished sneak peek on YouTube.   We have added brass key chains to the online store! We have some set designs but a lot of our key chains are made from scraps and left overs. We may experiment with different designs or features. These key chains vary in design, many are one off and have different features from each other. We will not be listing every single one off key chain separately, but you can always come by and see them here in the shop! Honda CM450 Bobber/Brat Bike (Making a Lower Shock Mount Bushing Puller.)

  I have been working on modifying a Honda CM450  (Bobber/Chopper Custom thing). I am in the middle of mounting a fender to the Swing arm. I wished to weld the mounting bung for the fender struts to part of the lower shock mount on the swing arm. The only problem became the fact that there is a metal sleeved rubber bushing pressed into the lower shock mount. Heat from welding will absolutely result in this rubber catching fire. Since no reasonable amount of hammering with a punch or drift would budge the bushing I had to come up with another solution. I did not wish to take the swing arm off to press out the bushing in the H Press.  Nor did I want to just weld it and have a melt down. Time to search through the scrap bin! 

  I was able to locate some 1"360 brass and a bit of 1-1/4 6061 aluminum. Game on! Please note some of the steps taken may have been skipped as this is not meant to be a tutorial for turning and lathe work. And some of the basic fundamentals were not photographed.

I started with the brass first by taking a facing cut to true up the end of the part and eliminate saw marks.

The part was then Center Drillled.

Next drilling with a 5/16 drill bit in order to be threaded with a 3/8-16 tap later on. 

Next I added a heavy bevel to the outer edge. This will help the puller enter and find center of the i.d. of the shock bushing mount as it begins to displace the rubber bushing . It reduces chances binding.

Counter sink before tapping to eliminate the bur caused by drilling and ensure the tap enters concentric and on center to the drilled hole. This can reduce tap breakage. Others may find the tap creates a bur and prefer to counter sink after tapping. Both ways have worked for me. Next I threaded the part using the slowest turning speed with the back gear of the lathe engaged. Unfortunately I was in a rush and failed to photo the tapping operation.

On to the aluminum. After facing, center drilling, I selected a W size drill bit. The letter size W bit is about .011 larger than 3/8. This will ensure that the 3/8 bolt that will be passing through the aluminum block will rotate freely with out binding or friction. Next I selected a large drill bit just under the od of the brass part I turned and began drilling the counter bore. Do not drill all the way thorough you only need the counter bore to be a little deeper than the lenght of the brass piece and the bushing you are removing. The goal is for the bushing and the brass to be able to enter the counter bore of the puller completely. The roof or ceiling of the counter bore will support a washer and bolt head on the other side (outside). This set up could have been done with the bolt passing through the brass and the threads in the aluminum or using a nut on the outside to draw the brass puller through the shock mount. But this would have required pulling the rear wheel to perform the work. Which I saw as an unnecessary step at this time.

Next I bored the counterbore out to .020 larger than the O.D. of the brass portion to allow for a nice friction free slip fit. This way I would not have to worry about the bushing binding and becoming caught inside the body of the puller once removed from the shock mount.

Here you can see the heavy chamfer  entering the i.d. of the counterbore. This helps guide the bushing into the counterbore.

 

Here you can see the other side of the aluminum body a 3/8-16 bolt will pass through. The head of the bolt will ride against a washer on this flat surface. The bolt will pass through the aluminum puller body then though the rubber bushing and thread into the brass puller. Be sure you have the heavy chamfer on the brass puller facing the bushing. It is also imperative to make sure the bolt is long enough to thread all the way through your puller body before pulling begins. This will improve the wear of the threads in the brass and decrease the likelihood of damaging the threads. This tool is a great once in a while item. In daily use I would find another option for pressing a threaded top hat bung into the brass body of the puller. But I believe otherwise brass and aluminum are the perfect materials for this tool. They are soft and will not mar or score the shock mount itself. Aluminum could have been used in place of brass but you will likely have problems with the threads stripping. So if that is all you have on hand you will probably have to modify this design.

 

Here it is ready to extract the bushing. It worked great and did exactly what I needed it to. This tool could have been made a number of different ways. With the tools and materials I had on hand this was the easiest way for me to get it done. Hopefully this will spark an idea for some one that will help them out in a pinch some day. I am also aware that I could have bought a puller of some sort to do this or made a tool to work with my slide hammer. But again this took under 20 minutes and was completed with scrap and cheap material I had on hand.
